Actress Candace Cameron Bure commended fellow child star Drake Bell for being “so brave” in telling his story of sexual abuse.

Bure appeared on ABC’s The View and shared her reaction to the documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. She spoke about her experience as a child star, best known for playing DJ Tanner on the ’80s sitcom Full House.

“It absolutely tore me apart. It broke my heart and it was so tragic, it’s so — it’s horrific and disgusting,” Bure said of the documentary. “I was very — I don’t think proud is the right word. But I was — I just felt like the fact that Drake was able to share his story was so brave.”

In the documentary, Bell revealed himself to be the once-anonymous minor behind a criminal case against Nickelodeon acting coach Brian Peck. Bell alleged he was repeatedly and violently assaulted by Peck, who was ultimately convicted in 2004.

“But my heart breaks for him, and my heart broke for his parents and trying to protect and not always seeing the signs,” Bure said. “So, you know, it’s a weird thing, the industry growing up as a kid, because, like, I didn’t have that experience. I know the other girls from our show didn’t have that experience, and there’s lots of child actors that don’t have that experience. But we know there’s a good plenty that have. And so I really think that it was good — it’s just more awareness that we can protect the next generation from that happening.”

Bure said her parents were “always around” and “so protective” during her near 200-episode run on Full House.

Peck went on to work for the Disney Channel on its children’s show The Suite Life of Zack & Cody following his conviction. Disney subsequently fired him when it discovered his convict status.
