NextImg:Canada's latest 'woke' attack on the US is genuinely absurd

Our neighbors up north are a good reminder of what an unpleasant fate awaits us if we let the most extreme liberal ideas here win the day. The latest absurdity out of Canada is a bizarre warning from its government that LGBT Canadians should take caution when visiting the United States due to our supposedly anti-LGBT policies.

“Global Affairs Canada (GAC), which advises on subjects like entry requirements, visas, border control, and cultural and legal differences in other territories, has now been updated to advise LGBTQ+ visitors to the U.S. to check state and local laws before planning a trip,” PinkNews reports . “As of Tuesday (29 August), the Canadian travel advisory’s ‘Laws and Culture’ section, which warns citizens of risks when traveling to the U.S., has been updated to recognize the risks posed to LGBTQ+ people.”

The update says: “Some states have enacted laws and policies that may affect 2SLGBTQI+ persons. Check relevant state and local laws.”

What, exactly, is motivating this pronouncement? Thankfully, the Canadian government provided some answers.

“Since the beginning of 2023, certain states in the U.S. have passed laws banning drag shows and restricting the transgender community from access to gender-affirming care and from participation in sporting events,” a GAC spokesperson explained . “The information is provided to enable travelers to make their own informed decisions regarding destinations.”

This is painfully dumb.

For starters, none of the supposedly “anti-LGBT” laws referenced have any bearing for a Canadian tourist visiting the U.S. Rules regulating sex segregation in school sports, for example, are totally irrelevant to a tourist. One does not typically go on a one-week vacation and enroll one’s child in high school girls’ swimming.

So, too, restrictions on access to medical gender transition treatments for minors, while certainly debatable, are not at all relevant to tourism. One does not simply stop by a local CVS while out of town and buy some hormone pills over the counter. A transgender tourist would be prescribed his or her medication and bring it along while visiting the U.S. Nor does one casually swing by the surgeon’s office for a quick double mastectomy while on a beach vacation in Florida.

There are simply no “anti-LGBT” policies in the U.S. that would have any relevance to a tourist. So, what’s really motivating Canada’s dumb travel “advisory”?

On one level, it’s probably just more obnoxious virtue-signaling. It’s an attempt to show the world how much more “enlightened” Canadians are than us or something. On another level, though, it’s part and parcel of the broader liberal worldview on LGBT matters, which is constantly making things out to be much worse than they are. This alarmist approach, perfectly embodied in these kinds of absurd “advisories” and “emergency declarations,” only discredits legitimate complaints and needlessly scares people.

It’s no way to support a community. And it’s certainly no way to engage in diplomacy with a neighboring country on which you economically depend.
