A California school district is contemplating adopting a policy of notifying parents when their child openly identifies as transgender.
The Tuesday night meeting of the Temecula Valley Unified School District board was packed with supporters and detractors of the proposal, according to a report.

Rainbow flags and clothing clashed with American flags and "Leave Our Kids Alone" shirts as people did their best to push their side of the issue.
The policy under consideration by TVUSD would mandate that parents receive a notification if a student openly identifies as a gender different from that on his or her birth certificate or uses school facilities that do not align with his or her assigned gender.
"As well intentioned as government bureaucrats might be, they can never substitute the role of parents in the moral formation of their own children. I trust our parents," a supporter of the policy said.
Detractors said such a policy could be dangerous.
"The No. 1 factor for having suicidal thoughts is being isolated, being alone, being unheard. You're putting a barrier between a child who is seeking advice and seeking guidance from a teacher who actually cares about them," according to one speaker.
