A California man had his hand chopped off by a sword-wielding attacker as a homelessness crisis grips the state.
The attack occurred Saturday night. Multiple people reported "what appeared to be a severed hand" on the ground in Riverside, Riverside Police Department spokesman Ryan Railsback said.

Officers responded to the scene, where they made a ghastly discovery.
"Officers found the hand and what appeared to be a crime scene, and around the same time, an adult male in his 60s showed up at a local hospital missing a hand," Railsback said. "This was, of course, related."
The victim, who was believed by authorities to be homeless, is expected to survive, according to a report.
The incident was likely to have been caused by a dispute between two homeless men, and it is believed that the victim and sword-wielding attacker were familiar with each other, Railsback said.
No arrests have been confirmed, and an investigation has been launched.
The number of homeless individuals in Democrat-run California accounted for roughly 30% of the nation's homeless population in 2022, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The Golden State also saw the largest increase in homelessness in the time period studied.
Between 2020 and 2022, homelessness rose 6.2%, while states such as Florida, under Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), saw a decrease of 5.6%.
