NextImg:California Democrats misplace trust in Mexico’s new president - Washington Examiner

Mexico’s new president is a United Nations climate bureaucrat, so naturally, California Democrats see her as an ally when it appears she is anything but.

Mexico’s president-elect is Claudia Sheinbaum, who worked on reports for the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Democratic politicians in California and liberal professors are praising this development because, as Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia said, “Having an engineer whose background is working on climate, it’s a big deal.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and California Democrats only really care about climate change when talking about foreign governments, which explains Newsom’s lovey-dovey relationship with the Chinese government and its climate “promises.” Sheinbaum’s Mexico is not likely to be a good American ally on much of anything else, though.

Sheinbaum is a close ally of Mexico’s outgoing president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who, you may recall, lied about Mexico’s involvement in fentanyl production in order to blame the United States alone for its fentanyl crisis. Sheinbaum and Lopez Obrador’s left-wing party is poised to have enough of a legislative majority that it can change the country’s constitution, which bodes ill given Mexico’s increasingly antagonistic attitude toward the U.S. Mexico’s worsening violence under Lopez Obrador is not likely to get better under Sheinbaum either, further strengthening and emboldening cartels that are wreaking havoc at the U.S. border.

That all has knock-on effects for crime, fentanyl overdose deaths in the U.S., and the border crisis, given that cartels are helping illegal immigrants reach and cross the border. But hey, California Democrats get another climate ally, so surely it must all be worth it, just as it is apparently worth it for Newsom to ignore China’s human rights abuses so he can pretend he is saving the planet.

California choosing the wrong side of an issue and embracing a regressing U.S. ally is not surprising, but it once again shows California Democrats’ lack of good judgment and twisted priorities. There is no indication that Sheinbaum’s Mexico will be a helpful U.S. ally on any of the problems Mexico is contributing to, but that does not matter to California Democrats who are obsessively focused on their incoherent climate agenda.
