The Left’s radical attempts to destroy any differences between men and women make the law an unforgiving master over being reasonable and empowers busybody lawyer leeches looking to make a quick buck at the expense of local communities.
Lima Restaurant has been crushed under the boot of an unforgiving antidiscrimination law in California. The family-run joint was one of the last independent businesses in Concord’s Todos Santos Plaza, with the rest being shuttered because of COVID-19 lockdowns. Lima Restaurant, already dealing with the burdensome costs of running a business in California, was brought to its knees by a discrimination lawsuit and forced to close at the end of last year.
What was Lima’s crime? Did the restaurant segregate its bathrooms or block black people from sitting at the counter? No, Lima’s death sentence came from a weekly three-hour promotion where drinks and wine were half-priced for women.
That’s right. Ladies’ night is canceled in California.
Lima was a popular restaurant that had been running this particular promotion for years, but now some spiteful community member or busybody lawyer, or both, decided to end it all. The Fresno Grizzlies minor league baseball team was similarly targeted over a ladies’ night promotion by the same lawyer who went after the Oakland Athletics for a Mother’s Day giveaway.
Elsewhere in California, women and girls are being erased as their own category. Girls’ sports are forced to accept boys. Girls’ locker rooms are supposed to accommodate boys. California has gone as far as to threaten to punish department stores that do not have gender-neutral sections for a “reasonable selection” of children’s toys or toothbrushes. Women and girls are no longer to have their own spaces, lest the heavy hand of the California antidiscrimination law come down on them.
Weirdly, this is only apparently a problem for girls. On the racial side, California has been looking to bring back discrimination on racial grounds, in its many different forms. California wants companies to make hiring decisions based on race and for universities to make admissions decisions based on the same. It was the voters who had to block the Democrats behind the radical antidiscrimination rules killing ladies’ nights from reinstituting racial quotas and racial hiring.

The California Reparations Task Force wants yet another affirmative action do-over over the objections of voters and to force taxpayers to cover the cost of slavery reparations for black people 160 years removed from slavery in a state that did not have slavery. Half-off drinks for women three hours out of the week? Destroy the business. Hire people based on their skin color and give them hundreds of taxpayer dollars for existing? Official goals of the California Democratic Party.
This is the bizarre set of circumstances that the California Democratic Party has put the state in, where a Mother’s Day giveaway and ladies’ night drinks are illegal while race-based discrimination is a policy goal. Residents of Concord lost a beloved local-run business that outlasted COVID-19 lockdowns because it engaged in the kind of “discrimination” that lets women have a good time and not the kind of approved discrimination that California Democrats want to implement.
