WNBA rookie Caitlin Clark shrugged off a question surrounding a culture war that centers on her name.

Clark addressed reporters Thursday when one asked her how she felt about her name being used in connection to topics often associated with culture wars. Currently, she is in her first season with the Indiana Fever and has been credited with a boost in attendance at WNBA games. Meanwhile, some fans lament all the attention she has received over 2024 NCAA champion Angel Reese, who is also in her rookie season.

“It’s not something I can control,” Clark answered the question. “Like I’ve said, basketball’s my job. Everything on the outside, I can’t control that, so I’m not going to spend time thinking about that. People can talk about what they want to talk about.”

When the reporter pressed her and asked if she was “bothered,” Clark responded that she wasn’t, adding, “I’m just here to play basketball.”

As the No. 1 WNBA draft pick, Clark has kept her No. 22 jersey number. During her senior year of her college career, she was named NCAA Player of the Year. Clark has since scored over 30 points in two of the Fever’s games. Despite her accomplishments, she was notably left out of Team USA ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Fever is currently 3-10 since adding Clark to its roster.
