The Washington Examiner’s Chief Political Correspondent, Byron York, suggested Turning Point USA will struggle to replace the “very unique individual” that was Charlie Kirk for its head.

“I think that all of the admiring testimony and discussion of him in the past two weeks has really suggested this was a very unique individual,” York said on The Hugh Hewitt Show Wednesday. “It’s really hard to continue an organization that is built on the talents of an extremely unique individual.”

Kirk died of a gunshot wound two weeks ago while at a campus event in Utah. Kirk’s widowed wife, Erika Kirk, has since been named the CEO of the foundation, which was started by Kirk in 2012.

York implied that Turning Point USA is facing a problem comparable to the Republican Party, which will have to present a new Republican candidate for president in 2028 when Trump reaches his term limit.

“This is in a larger sense, when the Republican party looks at Donald Trump and says this is an absolutely unique, historically unique, individual. It’s not like there’s going to be another one anytime soon,” York said.

“What the post-Trump Republican party will look like, who knows? But it’s going to be a lot of people trying to sort of live up to something that can’t actually even be lived up to,” York said.

Turning Point USA originally had two co-founders, Kirk and Bill Montgomery, who died in 2020 at the age of 80 after contracting COVID-19.

CONFLICT IN AFTERMATH OF KIRK KILLING

During a Sunday memorial service for her husband in Arizona, Erika Kirk pledged to the crowd, “everything that Turning Point USA built through Charlie’s vision and hard work, we will make 10 times greater through the power of his memory.” 

She also committed to continuing to open TPUSA chapters and hosting debates.
