Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) will introduce legislation later this week that would abolish the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, saying the agency has operated “outside the purview of Congress.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) created the CFPB during the 2008 financial crisis. At the time, it purported to fight for “fairness and transparency for mortgages, credit cards, and other consumer financial products and services.” Donalds explained on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria Bartiromo on Monday that it has far surpassed its original purpose.
“[T]he reason in particular that the CFPB is especially problematic is because it really operates outside of the purview of even Congress. Sure, the administrator of the CFPB has to come in and testify before Congress, but we all know those hearings — a lot of times a director is basically trying to run out the clock when it comes to meaningful oversight,” Donalds said.
“But when they would put out publications, memos, letters, it would basically have the force of law on companies before they actually went through the full administrative process. You cannot have an agency operating like that, a rogue agency like this. So, in my view, it is more than time for it to be shut down completely,” he added.

President Donald Trump issued a stop work order against the CFPB that is in full effect. Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) called on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to include the agency’s defunding in the budget reconciliation bill, but it did not make an appearance in the legislation. In the meantime, separate bills to defund the CFPB were introduced in the Senate as well.
Warren has stood by her agency, saying in a Sunday YouTube post that as long as Americans utilize a banking system, “the fight to protect the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is your fight.”
