Nothing better embodies how out of touch Democrats are than their boasting about how safe they are with their taxpayer-funded security while dismissing most people’s concerns about crime.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg went on MSNBC to dismiss people’s concerns about crime as just a narrative being pushed by conservatives. “We need to talk about the reality here,” Buttigieg said. “There’s a lot of funding and a lot of energy going into telling a different story, especially on ideological news outlets and online. But the simple facts and the simple reality are right here staring us in the face, including the fact I can safely walk my dog to the Capitol today in a way you couldn’t do when we all got here.”

Buttigieg said that on Sunday morning. Later that day, two people walking their dogs in Washington, D.C., were mugged, with one of the victims being stabbed. As it turns out, walking your dog in Washington, D.C., is really safe if you also happen to be a Cabinet secretary with taxpayer-funded security, as Buttigieg is.

This isn’t some unfortunate anecdotal example, either. Washington, D.C., finished 2023 with 274 homicides, a 36% increase from last year and the most the city has seen since 1997, when Buttigieg was in high school. The city had more than 900 reported carjackings last year and a 100% increase in gun crimes compared to pre-2020 levels.

None of that is going to affect Buttigieg, though, because your taxpayer dollars go to pay for his security. He can then walk his dog up and down the street without worrying about the violent crime that is getting normal people beaten or killed. Even members of Congress can’t avoid the violence that Washington, D.C., has courted, but Buttigieg can. So he gets to sit on an MSNBC set alongside a former Biden team member turned “journalist” in Jen Psaki and dismiss crime as just some narrative from “ideological news outlets” amid Washington, D.C.’s worst violence since the 1990s.

Like Democratic politicians who support defunding police departments or taking guns from law-abiding citizens, Buttigieg doesn’t have to worry about the consequences of crime because he has his own personal security. It is the purest of Democratic bubbles, which allows Buttigieg to dismiss the concerns of (mostly black) residents of Washington, D.C., who are being subjected to the city’s crime surge.
