WNBA center Brittney Griner will appear on the roster for the USA Basketball Women’s National Team training camp.

Out of the Nov. 12 training camp, 16 players will make the team to represent the U.S. at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Should Griner be selected, this will be her fourth time on Team USA. It would also be the first time Griner will travel for the sport after being detained in Russia last year over vapes discovered in her luggage that contained hash oil, a type of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the main active chemical in marijuana.

Griner was slated to play at the FIBA 2022 World Cup, but when officials discovered her vapes, she was charged with drug smuggling and initially sentenced to nine years in Russian prison. The center said she would never travel overseas unless it was to represent Team USA.

In France, marijuana possession is illegal, but products containing THC are allowed as long as the content is less than 0.3%, which is considerably less than the typical levels of THC in hash oil.

There are six other previous Olympians competing for a spot on Team USA. Former Olympians include Ariel Atkins, Allisha Gray, Angel McCoughtry, Kelsey Plum, Diana Taurasi, and Jackie Young. Taurasi is the most experienced as a five-time Olympic champion.

The team has won eight consecutive gold medals at the Olympics. Griner herself has two gold medals.

Griner's return to the sport came in a May game, which was her first since Game 4 of the 2021 WNBA Finals. Griner signed a yearlong deal worth $165,100 to rejoin her team earlier this year, months after President Joe Biden approved a high-profile prisoner swap with convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout to get her back in December.
