Brazil's top elections court ruled that former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro cannot run for office for the next eight years.
In a majority vote, the seven-member Superior Electoral Court ruled that Bolsonaro, 68, was guilty of abuse of power for undermining faith in democracy with his claims of election fraud, particularly regarding the credibility of the country's electronic voting systems. Bolsonaro, who returned to Brazil after three months in Florida, decried the ruling, which he had anticipated.

“It’s unfair to me, for God’s sake,” he told reporters Thursday, the Washington Post reported. “Show me something concrete that I did against democracy. I played within the bounds of the constitution the whole time.”
He rejected the court's argument that his questioning of the integrity of the voting system amounted to an attack on democracy.
“We cannot passively accept in Brazil that possible criticism or suggestions for improving the electoral system is seen as an attack on democracy,” he said.
The court argued that Bolsonaro willingly misled the public, and whipped his supporters into a frenzy that culminated in them storming Brazil's Congress, Supreme Court, and Presidential Palace on Jan. 8.
Presiding Judge Benedito Gonçalves, authoring the 382-page opinion, claimed that Bolsonaro “was fully, personally responsible” for attacking the electoral system. He cited a summer meeting with foreign diplomats, during which Bolsonaro gave an address touting supposed deficiencies in the voting process, as having “violated his duties as a president.”
“It is not possible to turn a blind eye to the anti-democratic effects of violent speeches and lies that jeopardize the credibility of the electoral system,” Gonçalves wrote.
The ruling is expected to be appealed by Bolsonaro, but even if the appeal is successful, he has over a dozen other related cases to deal with.

The eight-year bar from office means that the former president won't be able to run for office again until 2030 when he's 75.
Bolsonaro's allies, and Bolsonaro himself, have floated his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, as a replacement until he is eligible for office again, Reuters reported. The former president said that he would "of course" support his wife running in 2026.
