The Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks, winning their record-breaking 18th NBA championship.
The Celtics won their 17th championship 16 years ago to the day in 2008. Two years ago, the Celtics lost to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA finals. The Celtics were tied for having the most championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, who won their 17th title in 2020.
The final score was 106 to 88. The game was largely decided in the first two quarters, where the Celtics won 67 points compared to the Mavericks’s 46.
Monday night’s victory was helped by the Celtics’s two-star players, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
Role player Payton Pritchard was also celebrated on Monday night, making a buzzer-beating half-court shot — his second of the series.
The shot, at 50 feet away, was the longest in the history of the league’s play-by-play era, which began in 1997.
Yet another record was broken on Monday — Tatum broke Kobe Bryant’s record for most playoff points in NBA history before turning 27, at 2,696 and counting.

At another point, Celtics guard Derrick White chipped his tooth after hitting his face against the court.
The Mavericks have only won a single championship, in 2011.
