Brandeis University, a private university in Waltham, Massachusetts, extended its transfer application deadline until the end of May in the wake of Pro-Palestinan protests on other college campuses.

The university’s president, Ron Liebowitz, issued a statement Tuesday that the school would be extending their transfer application deadline until May 31 to give students who are uncomfortable with demonstrations on their campuses more time to submit an application.

“I am sure many of you have seen or read about the numerous protests on college and university campuses, where Jewish students are being targeted and attacked physically and verbally, preventing them from pursuing their studies and activities outside of class, just because they are Jewish or support Israel. For many, their safety has been compromised and this is unacceptable,” The statement said.

“Due to the current climate on many campuses around the world, we are now expanding the opportunity for students to seek the learning environment of our campus by extending the transfer application deadline to May 31, with notification by July 1,” The statement said.

The previous deadline for transfer students to apply for the fall semester was March 31. The President said all students deserve to attend a university free of “Jew-hatred.”

“Students elsewhere should know we welcome all — Jews and students from every background — who seek an excellent undergraduate education and an environment striving to be free of harassment and Jew-hatred to apply,” the statement said.

Over the past two weeks, college campuses across the country, notably in the Northeast, have grappled with pro-Palestinian protesters camping on university grounds. At Columbia University, classes have moved to a hybrid model for the remainder of the semester following campus unrest.

Brandeis is one of the 64 colleges and universities in the Boston area. The school also pointed to its historic ties to the Jewish faith as being part of the reason for the extension.

“As a university founded in 1948 by the American Jewish community to counter antisemitism and quotas on Jewish enrollment in higher education, Brandeis has been committed to protecting the safety of all its students, and, in the current atmosphere, we are proud of the supports we have in place to allow Jewish students to thrive,” the statement said.
