Zero illegal immigrants were released into the United States in May, according to Customs and Border Protection. In May 2024, 62,000 such people were released by the Border Patrol agents into the U.S. along the southwest border.

The CBP website thanked President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for their leadership and for helping to remove illegal immigrants from the U.S. more effectively.

The efforts come from multiple rulings from Trump, keeping his immigration promises. During his first days of his second term, Trump declared a national emergency at the border and a migrant “invasion,” following 8.72 million border encounters from 2021 to 2024.

Additionally, Trump has increased military presence on the border, ended the CBP One app, which allowed migrants to schedule appointments to present themselves at ports of entry, and imposed entry restrictions, leading to a historic month for immigration enforcement.

In May, Border Patrol agents encountered 8,725 illegal immigrants crossing the southwest border. That is a 93% decrease from May 2024, when agents encountered 117,905 people, according to a CBP press release.

The numbers last month are at “historic lows, reflecting a border that is more secure, more controlled, and hitting unprecedented levels of operational success,” according to CBP.

The second-lowest average daily number of CBP encounters in history was also achieved in May, the lowest since the 1960s. Nationwide, Border Patrol averaged 952 illegal immigrant encounters a day, a 2% decrease from April 2025.

“This administration has seen the fastest improvement in American border security of all time,” CBP wrote in an X post.

The mission of CBP continues, and officials will continue to work to decrease the encounter number, according to an X post.

“Border numbers continue to trend at historic lows, reinforcing the sustained success of our enforcement efforts in securing the homeland and protecting American communities,” acting CBP Commissioner Pete Flores said.
