A Border Patrol agent stationed in Vermont was killed after being shot during an encounter with an individual near the Canadian border, according to a news report.

The federal law enforcement agent was killed while conducting a traffic stop near Interstate 91 near the northern border Monday, just as President Donald Trump proceeded through inauguration proceedings in Washington, according to local media outlet WCAX3.

The incident occurred between Orleans and Newport, north of the city of Burlington.

The agent has not been identified, nor have the identities of the shooter or second person who was reportedly also on scene though they were reported to be illegally present in the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection did not respond to multiple requests for comment, including whether the shooting was related to illegal immigration or the immigration status of the individual involved in the shooting.

Agent deaths in the line of duty are rare. Only a few thousand agents are stationed across the northern border, and the large majority are based on the U.S.-Mexico border given that 99% of illegal border crossings occur between the U.S. and Mexico.

In Washington, Trump’s first orders of business included getting the nation’s borders in order, including declaring a national emergency.
