NextImg:Border czar Homan says he will throw Denver mayor in jail if he resists deportation plans - Washington Examiner

President-elect Donald Trump’s “border czar,” Tom Homan, said he would jail Denver Mayor Mike Johnston if he stands in the way of the administration’s mass deportation plans.

The former Immigration and Customs Enforcement director told Fox News’s Sean Hannity that Johnston’s public defiance of Trump’s proposed immigration policies would be violating federal law.

“All he has to do is look at Arizona v. U.S., and he would see he’s breaking the law,” Homan said. “But, look, me and the Denver mayor, we agree on one thing: he’s willing to go to jail, I’m willing to put him in jail.”

Johnston shared in an interview that he would not allow Denver police to collaborate with federal law authorities to round up illegal migrants.

Denver is deemed a “sanctuary city,” which means illegal immigrants can reside in the city without worrying about being deported. This also means that authorities won’t report petty criminals to ICE.

With its lax policies on illegal immigrants, Colorado has become a hot spot for the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. Members of the gang overtook three apartment complexes in the city of Aurora earlier this year.

While some Democratic mayors have waffled on their support for embracing more illegal immigrants coming to their cities, Johnston is standing by his promise to protect the illegal immigrants as Denver taxpayers have spent more than $42 million to assist the roughly 40,000 immigrants who have moved into the city.

Last week, Johnston said Denver would have its own “Tiananmen Square moment” by deploying police to be “stationed at the county line” to offset Trump’s plan of sending federal law enforcement agents to the city.

“It’s like the Tiananmen Square moment … right?” Johnston said. “You’d have every one of those Highland moms who came out for the migrants. And you do not want to mess with them.”

At the state level, Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) said he would also not support mass deportations of illegal immigrants.

Trump has threatened to cut federal funding for states that refuse to cooperate with his mass deportation plans.

“President Trump has been clear: we want to concentrate on public safety threats and national security threats,” Homan continued. “And I find it shocking that any mayor of the city would say they don’t want public safety threats removed from their neighborhoods.”
