NextImg:Bondi should stop Michigan from sheltering criminal illegal immigrants - Washington Examiner

Attorney General Pam Bondi is forcing states and cities to follow our immigration laws, and allegiances are about to be laid bare.

Bondi’s Justice Department is suing New York and Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) over their Green Light Law, which bars law enforcement agencies from sharing vehicle data with federal agencies for purposes of immigration enforcement.

“If you don’t comply with federal law, we will hold you accountable.” Bondi told reporters on Wednesday. “We did it to Illinois. Strike one. Strike two is New York. If you are a state not complying with federal law, you’re next, get ready.”

“They have a ‘tip-off’ provision that requires New York’s DMV commissioner to promptly inform any illegal alien when a federal immigration agency has requested their information,” the attorney general said. “It’s tipping off an illegal alien. And it’s unconstitutional, and that’s why we filed this lawsuit.”

Is Michigan next on Bondi’s list? Michigan also has those who are attempting to keep dangerous criminal illegal immigrants in our neighborhoods. Across the country, Democrats are divided over whether to protect or expose criminal illegal immigrants. The policy identity crisis in the Democratic Party is threatening to widen the fissure caused by the failed Harris-Walz experiment, and I’m here for it.

Michigan Senate Democrats, who hold a one-seat majority, blocked a bill introduced by Republican state Sen. Jonathan Lindsey to create a Developing Effective Policies on Orderly Removal and Transportation, or DEPORT, Task Force.

“This task force would work rapidly to develop policies promoting President Trump’s efforts to remove dangerous criminals from Michigan communities,” Lindsey said.

Meanwhile, state House Republicans passed a resolution to block funds from municipalities that act as safe houses for criminal immigrants.

“I would like to see us use funding as a way to punish these sanctuary jurisdictions,” Speaker Matt Hall told reporters. “Let me say it differently: I think it should be an incentive — increased funding beyond what’s constitutionally required is an incentive for things like working to have safer communities through complying with ICE and working and partnering with ICE.”

Despite these commonsense policies, several municipalities run by America Last progressives are going in the opposite direction.

“The Grand Rapids Police Department is not in the business of immigration enforcement, period,” Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said. “We want people to feel comfortable calling 911, especially victims coming forward without the fear of information regarding their documentation status being provided to immigration authorities.”

Grand Rapids has the dubious distinction of being the site of the gruesome murder of Ruby Garcia by a previously deported illegal immigrant, Brandon Ortiz-Vite.

Ortiz-Vite was driving Garcia on a highway near downtown Grand Rapids when he shot her. He dumped her on the side of the road, shot her again, and drove away. This is the kind of monster Democrats have turned their faces away from.

Elected officials in Saginaw, Bay City, and Kalamazoo Township have all moved to give shelter to illegal immigrants in some act of perverse defiance of Trump.

Who is going to be the next victim of Democrats’ self-righteous virtue signaling?

The DOJ isn’t the only agency increasing action. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has charged Jose Fernando-Perez, a 49-year-old illegal immigrant from Guatemala, with three counts of forcible rape of a child and three counts of aggravated rape of a child.

He was accused of the crimes in 2022 in Essex County Superior Court in Salem, Massachusetts. ICE lodged an immigration detainer to keep him in custody, but that was ignored by the court and he was released.

Why are progressives so unwilling to protect our communities from the worst criminal immigrants? Communities in Michigan and elsewhere would benefit from Bondi’s determination to keep our neighborhoods safe from criminals who shouldn’t be here in the first place. One thing is sure, Hochul is about to find out she should have been chasing down criminal illegal immigrants rather than executing rescue pets.
