Boeing and the labor union representing nearly 33,000 striking members have reached a tentative deal, potentially ending a five-week strike that is costing the aircraft manufacturer an estimated $1 billion a month.

Boeing is offering the union a 35% wage increase over four years, a $7,000 signing bonus, and an increase in the company contributions to the members’ 401(k) plans. The deal still needs to be voted on by the members of the International Association of Machinists before workers can return to work.

Union leadership did not endorse the deal, only saying that it “includes several key improvements” and that “it warrants presenting to the members and is worthy of your consideration.”

Union leaders had endorsed the previous deal, which offered workers a 25% wage increase, smaller improvements to the 401(k) contributions, and only a $3,000 bonus. Leadership had called this past plan the best deal ever reached with Boeing, but 95% of its rank-and-file membership rejected it.

The strike started just a month after CEO Kelly Ortberg took over.

Already facing federal indictments and hefty fines stemming from the crash of two Boeing planes, the strike caused the company greater financial strain. Last week, the company announced that it would lay off 10% of its global staff: 17,000 workers.
