Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) said on Tuesday that former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) should lead a hypothetical special counsel investigation into Jefferey Epstein.
“We deserve the truth about the Epstein Files. I’m ready for a Special Counsel to handle this,” Boebert said in a social media post, adding “@MattGaetz, how about it?”

Gaetz was originally tapped to be the attorney general under President Donald Trump, but his nomination fell apart as he faced his own allegations of sex trafficking and having sex with a minor. Gaetz resigned from Congress before he withdrew his nomination.
A report from the House Ethics Committee later found evidence that Gaetz engaged in sexual activity with a 17-year-old girl and used or possessed illegal drugs on multiple occasions from 2017 to 2019, including ecstasy and cocaine. He was never charged with a crime and has denied any wrongdoing.
Last week, the Justice Department and FBI released a joint memo that said Epstein did not have a client list and affirmed that he died in jail by suicide in 2019. The memo has enraged many of those in Trump’s Make America Great Again movement, who have for years voiced skepticism about Epstein’s death and demanded his clients be revealed.
Other conservative activists, including Laura Loomer, have called for a special council to investigate the matter.
Special counsels are typically appointed when a conflict of interest arises for the usual body that would prosecute the matter. These independent counsels have typically been appointed to investigate presidents and those connected to them.
Attorney General Pam Bondi has faced intense scrutiny from the MAGA base over her handling of the matter. In February, she released the “first phase” of files related to Epstein, but the majority of what was in these files was already public.
Earlier this year, Bondi suggested Epstein’s client list was “sitting on my desk right now to review.” However, the department’s memo later contradicted her by saying there was no evidence of such a list.
The circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death have sparked speculation for years due to his ties to the rich and powerful.
MAGA ANGER OVER EPSTEIN FILES GIVES TRUMP LIMITED OPTIONS TO QUELL DIVISIONS
Trump, who was friends with Epstein before having a falling out over two decades ago, has urged his supporters to “move on” from Epstein and claimed that “nobody cares” about the controversy.
“But I don’t understand why the Jeffrey Epstein case would be of interest to anybody,” Trump told reporters this week. “It’s pretty boring stuff, it’s sordid, but it’s boring, and I don’t understand why it keeps going. I think really only pretty bad people, including fake news, want to keep something like that going. But credible information — let them give it. Anything that’s credible, I would say let them have it.”
