Rep. Lauren Boebert's (R-CO) ex-husband has issued a statement online to ask the public to "show grace and mercy" to his ex-wife, as the two went through a "devastating divorce" earlier this year.

The statement from Jayson Boebert comes after the congresswoman received criticism for her behavior at a Colorado theater, where people complained about her vaping and being physically intimate with a man she was dating during a performance of Beetlejuice: The Musical. Jayson Boebert said he wanted the public to know "the truth of our broken marriage" and that he was unfaithful to his ex-wife "in so many ways."

"This has been a devastating divorce that I hold all responsibility for," the statement read. "It upsets me that everyone believes she left me over fame or a new lifestyle. That is far from the truth. Then again, most of what’s said about our family is untrue. Another battle we have faced together for too long. Much of this is on me because the problem starts at the root. I am the root."

Lauren and Jayson Boebert filed for divorce in May 2023, with their separation “truly about irreconcilable differences,” according to a statement from Lauren Boebert's office. The congresswoman cited her divorce as an indication that stress may have led her to act the way she did at the theater.

In the wake of their marriage ending, her ex-husband said he went on "a journey of self-reflection and personal growth," during which he learned "the importance of honesty and loyalty."

"I am asking for you all to show grace and mercy towards Lauren in this troubling season," the statement read. "She deserves a chance to earn your forgiveness and regain trust. I have broke her down in so many ways, but she will come out stronger as she always does, and so will I."

Lauren Boebert apologized for her behavior in the theater in a statement released on Friday. She also stated all future dates with the man she was with at the theater have been canceled.

“The past few days have been difficult and humbling, and I'm truly sorry,” Lauren Boebert's apology read. “While none of my actions or words as a private citizen that night were intended to be malicious or meant to cause harm, the reality is they did, and I regret that.”

That apology was not enough for the Texas Youth Summit, which removed Lauren Boebert from its list of scheduled speakers.
