Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg donated $5 million to a PAC supporting former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in his bid to become the next mayor of New York.

Bloomberg’s donation comes just 10 days before the city’s Democratic primary. Cuomo will face New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, City Comptroller Brad Lander, Councilwoman Adrienne Adams, and several other candidates.

Bloomberg endorsed Cuomo earlier this week, putting aside previous political differences from when their terms in office briefly overlapped.

“I care deeply about the future of our city, and since leaving office, it has been difficult to watch its struggles, especially since the pandemic. In sizing up the field in the race for mayor, there is one candidate whose management experience and government know-how stand above the others: Andrew Cuomo,” Bloomberg said in a joint statement with Cuomo.

“The question before New Yorkers is not: Who is the perfect choice? No mayor is perfect. The question is: Who is the best choice? To me, that choice is clear: Andrew Cuomo,” Bloomberg said.

Bloomberg’s donation adds to his $2.6 million in contributions this election cycle, according to Politico

After months of leading the polls by double digits, Cuomo’s lead in the field has narrowed. According to a poll from Data for Progress for a super PAC backing Mamdani, Cuomo would defeat him 51% to 49% after eight rounds of voting.

HERE’S WHO TO WATCH IN NEW YORK CITY’S MAYORAL RACE THIS YEAR

New York City utilizes ranked choice voting, so Mamdani and Lander endorsed each other to sink Cuomo’s campaign.

Lander had been more stagnant in the race but gained more momentum after being endorsed by the New York Times opinion panel. He is currently hovering in third place in the polls.
