Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN) said it is the “right move” to deport illegal immigrants from China in the United States, as they do not always have “our best interest at heart.”

At a time when a bill in the Senate is looking to cut down on student visas for Chinese immigrants, Hagerty expressed his relief that the Chinese nationals in the U.S. illegally are being dealt with.

“The many that have been deported now recently were here illegally, coming from China, coming from all over the world, many without our best interests at heart,” Hagerty said on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom Wednesday. “… Let’s not forget what China has done on fentanyl as well. … They are waging war on us in multiple ways.”

“They are trying at every front to gain advantage,” Hagerty said.

The Tennessee senator described the fungus that was recently smuggled in the boot of a Chinese national as “deeply, deeply concerning.”

“Had we not caught that, who knows what might have happened to our crops?” Hagerty said. “It would have been devastating, so we have to be much more diligent at every level. … Sending them back out of the country is the right move.”

The two people behind the plot to bring a biological pathogen from China to the U.S. have yet to be deported. They are both facing charges of conspiracy, smuggling goods into the U.S., false statements, and visa fraud.
