NextImg:Bill Gates compares regulating AI to moderating free speech - Washington Examiner

Billionaire Bill Gates discussed his concerns for artificial intelligence and how it can be moderated, comparing his concern for AI to how free speech convinced some not to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

Gates, who said he has been “a subject of misinformation,” was discussing his new Netflix series What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates when AI came up. He contended that there is “no limit” to the impacts AI will have on jobs. When asked if companies are doing enough to safeguard AI, Gates argued there is a debate over the United States wanting to get ahead on AI development while also taking the time to ensure it does it right.

“So it’s going to be the biggest change agent in the next 10 years, mostly good stuff,” Gates said on Today. “But will we get it right? You know, social media, we’re still arguing about, ‘Hey, we shouldn’t have let young kids use it as much,’ and how do you balance free speech versus crazy stuff that got people not to take vaccines, for example.”

The billionaire was asked about how lawmakers could regulate AI and social media, prompting Gates to suggest that they could implement financial consequences to people spreading false information with AI. He contended that government officials should use AI themselves to understand how consequential it is.

Gates also revealed that he uses AI himself, specifically to summarize books he does not have time to read or create speech drafts. He said it saves time and “highly” recommends using it.

“It can even write poems and songs in a way that is surprisingly creative,” Gates said.

Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) signed AB 2839 to regulate election-related deepfakes on social media. The governor argued that ensuring AI is not used “to undermine the public’s trust through disinformation” is necessary.
