President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden plan to pay respects to the late Rosalynn Carter, but White House officials declined to say Monday if that includes attending the former first lady's funeral.

Carter, wife of former President Jimmy Carter, died Sunday at her home in Georgia. She was 96 years old, and her husband, 99, is the oldest living former president.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden plan to pay respects to the late Rosalynn Carter, but White House officials declined to say Monday if that includes attending the former first lady's funeral.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre faced several questions on the topic during Monday's press briefing, and she confirmed that Joe Biden will order the flags at the White House and other federal buildings to be lowered to half-staff to honor Rosalynn Carter.

"Their thoughts are with President Carter and the entire Carter family," Jean-Pierre said. "As the president said yesterday, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter have been dear longtime friends, and Rosalynn Carter was an extraordinary, extraordinary first lady. She was a champion for equal rights and opportunities for women and girls, an advocate for mental health and wellness for every person, and a supporter of the often unseen, uncompensated caregivers of our children, aging loved ones, and people with disabilities.

"The president and the first lady are thinking of her and of him and keeping the Carter family in their prayers today," Jean-Pierre continued. "As it relates to any potential travel, the president and the first lady plan to pay respects to the former first lady. I don't have anything to share at this time on details or anything to confirm just yet, but certainly, as we have information or more details to share, we certainly will share that with all of you."

Joe Biden commemorated Rosalynn Carter in a statement Sunday, saying the former first lady will "always be in our hearts."

"Time and time again, during the more than four decades of our friendship — through rigors of campaigns, through the darkness of deep and profound loss — we always felt the hope, warmth, and optimism of Rosalynn Carter," Joe Biden said. "She will always be in our hearts. On behalf of a grateful nation, we send our love to President Carter, the entire Carter family, and the countless people across our nation and the world whose lives are better, fuller, and brighter because of the life and legacy of Rosalynn Carter."
