Former President Joe Biden’s assistant secretary for border and immigration policy wrote an opinion editorial that became the butt of jokes on social media for offering advice on “how to fix our immigration issue.”

Blas Nuñez-Neto penned the piece published by the New York Times on Tuesday. After his time with the Department of Homeland Security under Biden, Nuñez-Neto said he “learned that the border crisis is, to a large extent, an asylum crisis.”

“Our broken immigration laws have increasingly incentivized economic migrants to claim that they fear persecution in order to start a lengthy administrative process that allows them to remain in the United States and work,” Nuñez-Neto wrote.

However, Biden’s reputation on immigration made the article fodder for jokes online. Over 10 million immigrants reportedly entered the country illegally during Biden’s presidential tenure, the most recorded under any administration. 

Users poked fun at the title, “I Was One of Biden’s Border Advisers. Here’s How to Fix Our Immigration System,” by writing their own. Even the account for Nuñez-Neto’s former employer got in on the fun.

“I was Humpty Dumpty. Here’s how to sit on a wall,” DHS wrote.

Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) parodied the U.S. Agency for International Development, which has been under scrutiny for its spending. According to the White House, the agency spent $900,000 building a greenhouse gas calculator, $500,000 to buy electric busses in Rwanda, $4 million for legume systems research, $6 million for “Net Zero Cities” in Mexico, $3 million for an Iraqi version of Sesame Street, and $4 million for “sedentary migrants” in Colombia. 

“I ran USAID. Here’s how to manage taxpayer dollars,” Collins wrote.

Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) wrote a headline referencing Three Year Letterman, an internet personality, contrasted against the University of Alabama’s legendary coach Nick Saban.

“I played football for @3YearLetterman. Here’s how you beat Nick Saban,” Britt wrote.

Nuñez-Neto himself referred to the immigration situation under Biden’s presidency as a “crisis.”

“The failure to acknowledge this reality and take timely action to try to resolve it cost Democrats a great deal of trust with American voters and contributed to President [Donald] Trump’s return to the White House,” he wrote.
