NextImg:Biden ups cap on monthly parole screenings for migrants to 43,500

A greater number of immigrants in Mexico will be able to begin the legal admission process at the United States's southern border through a Biden administration initiative that the government expanded over the weekend.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection's CBP One app has increased the number of appointments available to noncitizens to 1,450 slots per day, the federal agency announced late last week. The increase translates to potentially 43,500 appointments — and people paroled into the country — per month.

“CBP is expanding the number of available appointments at ports of entry for the second time in less than two months, through scheduling enhancements and operational efficiencies,” said Troy Miller, a senior official performing the duties of CBP commissioner, in a statement. “By utilizing innovative technologies like CBP One™, we are improving the delivery of our homeland security mission and providing for safe and efficient processes at ports of entry.”

The Biden administration launched the phone app in January as a way for immigrants who had traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border to seek admission without illegally entering the U.S. by crossing between the ports of entry where vehicles are inspected.

CBP described the process as providing a "safe, orderly, and humane process" for immigrants to access ports of entry, avoiding long lines.

Immigrants can request a daily appointment time. The system uses an individual's current location to schedule an appointment at the closest of eight ports of entry on the 2,000-mile southern border that participate in the program.

Customs officers receive information from the person requesting an appointment and can review it in advance of screening and vetting. The Biden administration has opted to parole immigrants into the U.S. by the hundreds of thousands, including those who illegally enter the country.

As of last week, CBP had been accepting 1,250 appointments per day, up from 1,000 per day before Title 42 ended on May 11.

Since public health policy Title 42 ended in mid-May through June 23, CBP reported that more than 49,000 immigrants have obtained appointments and shown up.

Migrants who cross the border illegally face harsher consequences than when Title 42 was in place. Under the Biden administration's Circumvention of Lawful Pathways rule, immigrants who have passed through other countries and not sought asylum there first will not be eligible for release into the U.S.

House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) has questioned the Biden administration's legal ability to parole a large number of people given that parole is supposed to be administered on a case-by-case basis.

Green has also accused the Biden administration of falsely claiming that illegal crossings between the ports were down after they dropped in May to the lowest level in two years. He argued that the expansion of parole was illegal and done in an attempt to shift the number of illegal entries to the appointment system so that it appears border crossings are down.

The ports of entry participating in CBP One are Brownsville, Paso Del Norte in El Paso, Eagle Pass, Hidalgo, and Laredo in Texas; Calexico and San Ysidro in California; and Nogales in Arizona.
