President Joe Biden will meet with a group of artificial intelligence experts and researchers Tuesday in San Francisco as the administration sprints to address questions and fears about the new technology.

Biden traveled to California on Monday, where he delivered climate-focused remarks in Palo Alto alongside Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA). He also attended several campaign events, including a closed-door fundraiser, later that evening.

CONSERVATIVES WAGE WAR ON BIDEN'S ADMINISTRATIVE STATE

In recent weeks, the Biden White House has rolled out several AI initiatives, including a comprehensive "Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights" and an executive order directing the federal government to "root out bias" in existing and new AI tools. The Biden administration has also invested $360 million to stand up 18 National AI Research Institutes.

"AI is a top priority for the President and his team. Generative AI tools have increased significantly in the past several months and we don’t want to solve yesterday’s problem. It’s the very reason the President and Vice President summoned the leading CEOs to the White House and with one week’s notice, so we are staying ahead of the problem and tackling it with urgency," a White House official said ahead of Tuesday's meeting.

"The White House Chief of Staff office is overseeing a process to rapidly develop decisive actions we can take over the coming weeks," they added. "White House principals have met to discuss this issue 2-3 times a week in addition to ongoing daily work being done across the White House and agencies. White House officials are also working on securing commitments from leading AI companies to combat challenges from the government and the private sector side."

The White House says the meeting will also be attended by representatives from Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the Center for Human Technology, and other industry groups.

Biden's recent championing of AI has come under fire as the technologies have increasingly been used to spread misinformation online.

"We remain concerned about an uptick in deepfake videos and manipulated images spreading on social media platforms," White House spokeswoman Robyn Patterson told reporters of a deepfake incident that purported to show an attack on the Pentagon. "As the technology for creating fake videos and images improves, it’s important for the media and the public to be aware of this trend, which we expect to grow, if not exponentially."
