Readouts from the White House and No. 10 Downing Street on the meeting between President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak did not mention Biden's decision to send Ukraine cluster bombs despite ally objections.

The pair's meeting in London comes before this week's NATO Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, and amid Ukraine's slower-than-expected offensive against Russia.

"They reaffirmed their steadfast support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression," the White House said Monday. "The leaders discussed the Atlantic Declaration on economic partnership they launched in June, including next steps to drive toward key outcomes in the months ahead. They also reviewed developments in Northern Ireland and efforts to ensure continued progress there."

Since Biden and Sunak's meeting at the White House last month, the two countries have made progress on the U.S.-U.K. Critical Minerals Agreement and the Joint Action Group on Energy Security, according to No. 10, with the prime minister also updating the president on the AI Summit in the U.K., which is planned for the fall.

"On broader NATO issues, they agreed on the need to ensure that Sweden has a swift path to full NATO accession," No. 10 said. "The Prime Minister and President Biden also discussed the broader geopolitical context, including in the Indo-Pacific and with regard to Iran."

Biden has defended his "very difficult decision" to send the cluster bombs to Ukraine, conceding it took him "a while to be convinced to do it" but that "the Ukrainians are running out of ammunition."

Sunak had earlier underscored how the U.K. is one of 123 countries that have signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which prohibits the production and use of the bombs.
