NextImg:Biden sees sharp drop in support in Democratic stronghold of California: Poll

President Joe Biden is losing ground with Democratic-aligned voting groups in California, one of America's bluest states.

For the first time since he assumed office, a majority of California voters disapprove of Biden’s job performance. According to the University of California, Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times released Wednesday, 52% of the state’s voters disapprove of the president’s performance in the Oval Office, and 44% approve. Since a similar poll in May, disapproval of Biden has risen by 6% and approval has fallen by 4%.

The Democratic president is seeing diminishing support among key groups that helped carry him to the White House last presidential election. Biden is experiencing a steep drop among Latino voters who supported him in 2020, from 66% then to 38% now. Black voters are reporting a smaller but still significant drop in support, from 74% then to 60% now. Only 43% of California voters under 50 say they would cast their ballot for Biden again — over 60% of that group voted for him in 2020.

The poll indicates that no single topic accounts for Democratic voters in California swaying their support away from Biden. Across the nation, voters are down on the Biden economy, while inflation has yet to drop dramatically.

Biden’s presidency has had to endure the conflict in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war with the ensuing wave of backlash against the administration's response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The poll shows a slim margin between Biden’s 2020 voters who approve and disapprove of his handling of the Israel-Hamas fighting, 47% to 43%, respectively.

Biden continues to lead former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical 2024 match up 46% to 31%.

The poll surveyed 6,342 California registered voters, including a weighted subsample of 4,506 likely voters and 1,234 Republican likely voters, from Oct. 24 to 30. The full poll had a margin of error of 2 percentage points, 2.5 points for the sub-sample, and 4 points for the likely Republican voters.
