In a rush to keep black voters in his coalition, President Joe Biden has resorted to cringeworthy pandering and racially inflammatory statements that have been a hallmark of his political career.

In a recent post on X, Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. claimed the only reason he won in 2020 was because of black voters and that it was proof that voting matters.

“Folks, if anyone is wondering whether your vote matters, remember this. Because Black Americans voted, I am president, Kamala Harris is a historic vice president, and Donald Trump is a loser,” the president wrote.

Polling has consistently indicated that Biden’s support among the demographic has declined significantly from four years ago and greatly imperils his reelection chances. But rather than address voter concerns about border security, inflation, and crime, Biden is counting on racial grievance politics to keep black votes in his camp.

For Biden, this is a pattern of behavior that long predates his 2024 campaign.

At a rally in Philadelphia on Wednesday, Biden leaned into his history of racially inflammatory rhetoric by claiming that his opponent, former President Donald Trump, “won’t say ‘Black Lives Matter’ and invokes neo-Nazi, Third Reich terms.” The remark was reminiscent of 2012 when he told a crowd of black voters that Republican nominee Mitt Romney wanted to “put you all back in chains.”

For all of Biden’s racial pandering, the reality is that his problems with black voters will not be resolved by resorting to tired and maliciously false tropes that paint Republicans as neo-Nazis who want to bring back slavery and segregation and see black people as subhuman.

The truth is that Trump spent his term in office enacting policies that improved the lives of people from all walks of life. Meanwhile, Biden has overseen a period of high inflation and porous border security that has made the people of the United States poorer and less safe.

With such a disastrous record in office, the only strategy Biden has left is to inflame racial tensions. But this time, it may not work.
