Several left-leaning media outlets wrote a letter encouraging President Joe Biden to debate former President Donald Trump. But when the rubber meets the road, those outlets will shrug it off if Biden refuses, even though that would prove he is unfit for office.
Among the outlets calling for a general election debate are ABC News, the Associated Press, CBS News, CNN, NBC, NPR, PBS, and USA Today. While their letter was sent to both Biden and Trump, Trump has already indicated he wants to debate. The question is whether Biden, who can barely get through scripted public events, will choose to take part in a two-hour-or-so-long debate.
We already know there will be little liberal media outrage if Biden decides not to debate, though, because there has been little outrage as Biden ran a basement campaign in 2020 and has avoided serious interviews and press conferences throughout his presidency. Already, David Frum at the Atlantic is saying that Biden should refuse a debate, even recommending a statement for Biden’s team to use: “The Constitution is not debatable. The president does not participate in forums with a person under criminal indictment for his attempt to overthrow the Constitution.”
On the flip side of that, if Biden cannot defend the Constitution in a debate with a rambling, mediocre debater in Donald Trump, that proves him unfit for the job. Trump managed to rant his way toward a draw the first time he debated Biden in 2020 by talking all over his own points. Most politicians would dream of being able to blast their opponent in a live debate over being under criminal indictment. If anything, Trump being under indictment is a worse excuse for Biden to duck a debate, not a better one.

If Biden is too scared or mentally far gone to debate a coherent politician, he is clearly incapable of doing the job. Now change that coherent politician to Trump, who is a poor debater and provides a limitless amount of fodder for opposing politicians. Declaring that Biden should still be reelected in that case would be the equivalent of the New York Yankees signing a baseball player who can’t hit a baseball off of a tee.
Whatever excuse you want to use, Biden refusing to debate would be an admission by him that he would lose any debate he would take part in, even to Trump. His team knows it, Frum knows it, and all these other liberal media outlets know it, which is why they won’t be too bent out of shape if and when Biden ignores their request to debate.
