Flags will be flown at half-staff on Saturday in honor of former first lady Rosalynn Carter.

Carter, who was 96, died Sunday at her home in Plains, Georgia. Her funeral will be held over three days next week in Atlanta and Sumter County, Georgia, where Plains is located.

"Throughout her life as First Lady of Georgia and First Lady of the United States, Rosalynn Carter exemplified hope, warmth, and a steadfast commitment to doing all she could to address many of our society's greatest needs," President Joe Biden said in ordering flags flown at half-staff.

"She was a champion for equal rights and opportunities for women and girls an advocate for mental health and wellness for all, and a supporter of the often unseen and uncompensated caregivers of our children, aging loved ones, and people with disabilities," Biden continued.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed Monday that Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will pay respects to Carter, though she declined to say if that would include attending the former first lady's funeral.

In his declaration, Biden also praised Carter's 77 years of marriage to her husband, former president Jimmy Carter.

"The deep love shared between Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter is the definition of partnership, and their humble leadership is the definition of patriotism," he said.

Flags will be at half-staff at all military posts and naval stations, naval vessels, and at all U.S. embassies, legations, consular offices, and military facilities abroad.
