President Joe Biden spent years saying that “no one is above the law.” It has always been clear, though, that Biden thinks that statement doesn’t apply to him and his family.
Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter was entirely predictable. There might be no more obvious lie from a president in history than Biden’s repeated claims that he would not pardon his son, who was convicted on federal gun charges in June and pleaded guilty to nine federal tax charges in September. The president went as far as to say that Hunter Biden was unfairly targeted for prosecution and that his convictions were a “miscarriage of justice.”
There is no doubt about Hunter Biden’s guilt. He lied on federal forms about his drug use when buying a gun in 2018 and pleaded guilty to the tax charges. But Joe Biden thinks his son should be above the law, which is why the pardon came down. It is also why the Department of Justice tried to give Hunter Biden a sweetheart plea deal that would have included broad immunity from any future prosecution of Hunter Biden’s failure to register as a foreign agent for his business connections to Ukraine, specifically to Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
This is reflected in the pardon the president issued, which isn’t limited to Hunter Biden’s tax and gun crimes but covers any and all crimes he “has committed or may have committed” from January 2014 to December 2024. Hunter Biden joined the board of Burisma in April 2014, which he got by exploiting his family name while Joe Biden served as vice president. That is not some coincidence.

Joe Biden allowed his crack-addicted, deadbeat son to hang around and mooch off his name during his vice presidency and brought Hunter nearly everywhere once he became president because he thinks his family should be above the law. Joe Biden himself was shown to be above the law, being excused for mishandling confidential documents from his vice presidency by a special counsel investigation because prosecutors thought he would simply be seen as an old man with a bad memory. Joe Biden also passively supported Hunter’s attempt to deprive the mother of one of his children of child support payments.
If over a decade of influence peddling and multiple decades of Biden coddling his deadbeat son are an indication of anything, it is that Joe Biden views his family as being above the law. Joe Biden does not think he or his family should ever have to answer to anyone, any law, or any ethical standards because he is an arrogant, corrupt political fossil who believes his political standing should give him special privileges that no one else could ever dream of having.
