NextImg:Biden loses ground with black and women voters in Michigan: Poll

New polling data released on Saturday shows that President Joe Biden is losing ground among key demographic groups in the swing state of Michigan less than a year out from the 2024 presidential election.

The poll, conducted by EPIC-MRA, found former President Donald Trump leading Biden among Michigan voters 46%-41% in a head-to-head matchup. Biden won the state 51%-48% in 2020.

"Democrats ought to be aware there is a growing possibility that Donald Trump may become president again," said EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn, per the Detroit Free Press.

Exit polls from the 2020 election showed black voters in Michigan overwhelmingly supported Biden at 92% overall. Separated by gender, 88% of black men supported Biden in 2020 compared to 95% of black women.

Saturday's poll, however, reveals a substantial drop in support for Biden among black voters, with only 62% of black respondents saying they would back the current president for a second term.

Of black voters who would not reelect the president, 17% supported Trump, and 21% remained undecided.

Biden also is losing critical support among female voters to alternative Republican presidential contender and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

Although Biden leads Trump slightly among women, 43%-42%, with 15% undecided, Haley leads Biden among female voters, 46-36%, with 19% undecided. By contrast, 57% of female voters supported Biden in 2020, according to exit polls.

In an overall matchup between Haley and Biden, Haley won the state by a margin of 47%-36%, with 17% undecided, despite the fact that 37% of respondents had not heard of her before.

Michigan's coveted 16 Electoral College votes have proved critical to the success of presidential candidates. Of the industrial bloc of swing states, including Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Wisconsin, Michigan has leaned the most Democratic, with Trump's victory in the state in 2016 being a surprise.

Porn, the pollster, suggested that record high inflation rates as well as Biden's advanced age have soured Michigan voters on his abilities.

"I think it’s [Biden's] age and comparative perceptions of him versus Trump," said Porn. "People are dismissing the Bidenomics approach — they're not impressed with that messaging."

Michiganders have also settled the issue of abortion in the state with the approval of Proposal 3, which enshrined abortion rights into the state constitution.

Although this move has widely aided Democrats in state elections, 28% of self-identified "pro-choice" voters supported Trump in Saturday's poll.
