President Joe Biden spoke to Argentina's President-elect Javier Milei Wednesday and congratulated him on his election, according to the White House.

Milei, an economist and controversial libertarian, defeated Argentina's incumbent Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa, in the second round of the country's general election on Nov. 19. Milei ran heavily against inflationary government spending and abortion protections and vowed to legalize the sale of firearms.

"The president applauded the conduct of the election as a testament to the strength of Argentina’s democratic institutions," the White House said in a statement. "The two leaders discussed the importance of continuing to build on the strong relationship between the United States and Argentina on economic issues, on regional and multilateral cooperation, and on shared priorities, including advocating for the protection of human rights, addressing food insecurity and investing in clean energy."

The president frequently speaks to and congratulates foreign leaders on their successful elections, and White House officials were pressed Monday on why the administration had yet to publish a readout of such a call.

"There was a tweet by Jake Sullivan congratulating him on his win. We look forward to working with him and his administration," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters at Monday's briefing. "Argentina is a terrific partner in the region, and there's an awful lot of things we share in terms of values — value of democracy, human rights, and just hemispheric security and economic concerns — that we’ll look forward to working with him and his team on."
