NextImg:Biden is not showing control over campus protests: Sarah Bedford - Washington Examiner

The Washington Examiner’s Sarah Bedford contended Wednesday that President Joe Biden has not attempted to calm the disorder happening across the United States, specifically on college campuses.

As massive protests in support of Palestinians have taken place, some, such as those at Columbia University, have turned violent. Bedford, the investigations editor for the Washington Examiner, argued that Biden’s relative indifference regarding the ensuing unrest has allowed former President Donald Trump, the presumptive presidential nominee for the Republican Party, to have “a monopoly” on the topic.

“Joe Biden is not trying to demonstrate that he has control of the situation,” Bedford said on Fox News’s Your World with Neil Cavuto. “Right now, it seems like his primary concern is not alienating the very small faction of the Democratic Party that just happens to be concentrated in some of these swing states that would be upset with him if he were perceived as cracking down on these protesters.”

Bedford added that while Biden seems to be avoiding controversy from his supporters who support Palestinians, he is potentially pushing away voters who oppose the lawlessness and chaos happening in these protests. The latter voting bloc resides in states such as Georgia and Pennsylvania that could experience Biden “capitulating to a far-Left wing of the Democratic Party” that does not represent them.

“They are loud, and they get a lot of attention, but the majority of Americans do not sympathize with Hamas and are on the side of Israel, and so for those centrist voters who, in all of those other states, will decide the election, I think Joe Biden is really risking alienating them by trying to appease this small cloud faction,” Bedford said.

Amid the protests happening across the United States, Trump has asked Biden to speak out against the violence and antisemitism happening. The move by the former president mirrors a statement Biden made in 2020 when he criticized Trump’s handling of the Black Lives Matter protests and riots that occurred at the time.

During a Wisconsin campaign event, Trump praised members of the New York Police Department who stormed Hamilton Hall at Columbia University to remove protesting college students, stating they did “an incredible job.”
