President Joe Biden has once again called on people to help “lower the temperature” of the country. The problem is he has already proven himself incapable of being the uniting force he is trying to appear as.

After the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, Biden addressed the nation to talk “about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics.” He said that “while we may disagree, we are not enemies” and that “the political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It’s time to cool it down. And we all have a responsibility to do that.”

If this sounds familiar to you, it’s because Biden used this kind of rhetoric after winning in 2020.

“To make progress, we have to stop treating our opponents as our enemies,” Biden said at the time. “They are not our enemies. They are Americans.”

“It’s time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again,” he added.

It rang hollow then, given Biden’s track record of smearing his opponents, and it rings hollow now from Biden as well. After his approval rating tanked early into his term, Biden turned to attacking half the country in the harshest of terms. In 2022 in Philadelphia, backed by dark red lighting, Biden said the Republican Party was “dominated” by “Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans” who want to “undermine democracy itself” and take away people’s rights.

“Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic,” Biden said. “They do not believe in the rule of law. They do not recognize the will of the people.”

This has been the norm for Biden throughout his presidency. He referred to “this MAGA threat” and labeled Republicans extremists on multiple occasions. If you were to believe Biden’s rhetoric over the last few years, you would think Trump and the Republican Party were an extremist cult that wants to establish a dictatorship and poses a threat to women and minorities. How can Biden, then, pretend he has any role in “lowering the temperature” of the country?

Biden is incapable of being the uniter-in-chief. He always has been, and he proved that again when the examples of political violence he condemned alongside the assassination attempt on Trump were all examples of violence (or “intimidation”) against Democrats, ignoring the attempted assassinations of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY), and multiple congressional Republicans during the congressional baseball shooting.

Biden has continuously spoken out from both sides of his mouth on this matter. He has been a toxic political voice for decades and has shown that his partisan instincts will always trump his attempts to paint himself as a bipartisan unifier who will tamp down the political rhetoric in the country.
