President Joe Biden distanced the United States and its Western allies from what Yevgeny Prigozhin is describing as his Wagner mercenary group's protest of Russia's war in Ukraine.

"We had nothing to do with it. This was part of a struggle within the Russian system," Biden said Monday at the White House.

Biden told a crowd gathered in the East Room for an infrastructure event that he directed his national security team last weekend to monitor the situation, reporting to him "hour by hour," and prepare for "a range of scenarios." The White House also hosted a call with key allies to "make sure we're all on the same page," according to Biden.

"They agreed with me that we had to make sure we gave Putin no excuse. Let me emphasize, we gave Putin no excuse to blame this on the West or to blame this on NATO," he said. "We made clear that we were not involved."

Biden additionally spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last weekend, with another conversation poised to take place later Monday or Tuesday morning.

"I told him that no matter what happened in Russia, let me say it again, no matter what happened in Russia, we, the United States, will continue to support Ukraine's defense, and its sovereignty, and its territorial integrity," he said.

Discussions with allies, too, will continue regarding a coordinated response and "what to anticipate," according to Biden.

"We're going to keep assessing the fallout of this weekend's events and the implications from Russia and Ukraine, but it's still too early to reach a definitive conclusion about where this is going," he said.

Prigozhin ordered his private forces to march on Moscow last weekend after a decree that his soldiers would be folded into the Russian military and unconfirmed claims of an attack on his troops by the Defense Ministry before he agreed to pull them back and be exiled to Belarus.
