President Joe Biden will travel to New Delhi, India, next month for the Group of 20 leaders summit amid speculation that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend, too.

During the Sept. 7-10 summit, hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Biden and G20 partners will discuss climate change and the clean energy transition, the economic and social consequences of Putin’s war in Ukraine, and poverty alleviation.

"While in New Delhi, President Biden will also commend Prime Minister Modi’s leadership of the G20 and reaffirm the U.S. commitment to the G20 as the premier forum of economic cooperation, including by hosting it in 2026," the White House said Tuesday.

Before Biden's trip, Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Jakarta, Indonesia, for the U.S.-ASEAN and East Asia summits, from Sept. 4-7. There, she will underscore programs promoting "shared prosperity and security," such as those regarding climate change, maritime security, infrastructure, economic growth, and international rules and norms.

"This visit builds on President Biden’s participation in the U.S.-ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in November 2022, his virtual participation in the U.S.-ASEAN Summit and East Asia Summit in November 2021, and the president’s and vice president’s engagements with ASEAN leaders at the historic May 2022 U.S.-ASEAN Special Summit in Washington, D.C.," the White House said.

Biden and Xi met on the sidelines of last year's G20 in Bali, Indonesia. Putin did not attend the summit, which was dominated by conversations concerning the Ukraine war.
