President Joe Biden condemned the Friday morning Russian airstrike against Ukraine, calling it a "massive bombardment" that must be stopped.

Russia shot rockets and drones throughout Ukraine early in the day, hitting schools, hospitals, and homes in one of the largest air strikes since the war began nearly two years ago.

"This massive bombardment used drones and missiles, including missiles with hypersonic capability, to strike cities and civilian infrastructure all across Ukraine," Biden said in a statement. "It is a stark reminder to the world that, after nearly two years of this devastating war, [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s objective remains unchanged. He seeks to obliterate Ukraine and subjugate its people. He must be stopped."

While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a majority of the 110 rockets fired during the attacks were intercepted, strikes reportedly hit a maternity hospital, a shopping mall, and residential areas.

Ukraine used an air defense system that the United States and other partners delivered, according to the statement, to successfully intercept many of the missiles. Biden noted that fact while calling on Congress to approve more funding for the embattled country.

"The American people can be proud of the lives we have helped to save and the support we have given Ukraine as it defends its people, its freedom, and its independence," he said. "But unless Congress takes urgent action in the new year, we will not be able to continue sending the weapons and vital air defense systems Ukraine needs to protect its people. Congress must step up and act without any further delay."

Zelensky said Russia used “almost everything it has in its arsenal” during the attacks, according to NBC News. At least 18 people were killed and 130 injured in the blasts.

Biden warned that the war and its implications stretch far beyond the physical borders of Ukraine and Russia.

"Putin has not just attempted to destroy Ukraine; he has threatened some of our NATO Allies as well," the president said. "When dictators and autocrats are allowed to run roughshod in Europe, the risk rises that the United States gets pulled in directly. And the consequences reverberate around the world.

"That’s why the United States has rallied a coalition of more than 50 countries to support the defense of Ukraine," Biden continued. "We cannot let our allies and partners down. We cannot let Ukraine down. History will judge harshly those who fail to answer freedom’s call."
