President Joe Biden traveled to New Hampshire on Tuesday to celebrate 1 million veterans applying for coverage through the PACT Act, a veterans healthcare bill Biden signed into law in 2022.

The legislation extends coverage for veterans exposed to burn pits and toxic substances while serving overseas.

The president’s late son, Beau Biden, died from brain cancer that Joe Biden believes was caused by burn pit exposure, and the older Biden recalled his son’s story during Tuesday’s remarks.

“So this is personal to me and my family and his family and his children and so many of yours,” the president said. “Come hell or high water, we’re going to protect the heroes and protect our nation.”

“We came together to keep our promises. Veterans, you are the solid steel spine of our nation, and that’s not hyperbole. Your families are the courageous heart,” Joe Biden said. “Just as you have done your duty to America in the past, we’re now finally beginning to do our duty to you.”

Of the 1 million claims, the PACT Act has already approved $5.7 million in benefits to 890,000 veterans and their families as of Tuesday, according to the White House. New Hampshire has seen roughly 3,000 of those claims approved, with another roughly 2,000 awaiting approval.

Though all four members of New Hampshire’s congressional delegation are Democrats, the state is shaping up to come down to the wire in the 2024 general election.

A poll published Monday by the New Hampshire Journal showed Biden virtually tied with former President Donald Trump at 36%. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. drew more than 14% in the same poll, while an additional 12% of those surveyed said they planned to vote for “none” of the aforementioned candidates.
