President Joe Biden is continuing to bleed support from elected Democrats. Given that he isn’t getting any younger, it is only a matter of time before the Democrats’ weird marriage to Biden reaches a boiling point.
Four more House Democrats have publicly called on Biden to drop out of the race. Reps. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Adam Smith (D-WA), Mark Takano (D-CA), and Joe Morelle (D-NY) joined Reps. Angie Craig (D-MN), Mike Quigley (D-IL), Seth Moulton (D-MA), Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), and Lloyd Doggett (TX) in publicly pressuring Biden to step down. After Doggett broke the dam, the constant leak of elected Democrats breaking ranks has continued, and more is likely coming, with a “fast-growing number” of Democrats wanting Biden to drop out by Friday.
Biden’s chief problem, his age and diminished mental faculties, is also not going to get better. Biden isn’t going to get younger as the days go by, and he isn’t suddenly going to regain his cogency. He looks passable reading words someone wrote for him off a teleprompter, but he continues to struggle in unscripted environments. Just as he bumbled through the first presidential debate with former President Donald Trump, Biden struggled in an interview with former Democratic operative George Stephanopoulos.
We also know that not all of Biden’s interviews are unscripted. Two radio hosts claim their interviews with Biden were conducted with questions provided to them by the White House. Biden even had to read off a script in an interview with the show that is friendliest to him, MSNBC’s Morning Joe, and still tripped over his words as he rambled on in sentences with no clear directions.

At some point, this toxic combination is going to explode. Each Democrat publicly calling on Biden to resign drives another stake into Biden’s fast-fading chances of winning. Biden continues to insist he will ride this out, even as he is completely unable to perform in any capacity in live, unscripted events. Either Biden is going to have to drop out as more elected Democrats pile on or the Democratic Party is going to eat Biden’s campaign (somewhat) alive while trying to force him out of the race.
Democrats had plenty of opportunities to rip this bandage off before now. The party obviously needed to open up a primary to replace Biden but was too invested in the “all is fine” narrative it had chosen to embrace. The longer Biden’s stubbornness drags this on, the more damage that is done to Democrats one way or another. Democrats have created for themselves a no-win situation that carries more and more risk with each passing day, all because the arrogance of both Biden and the party ran head-first into a reality that they were trying to deny.
