Former President Donald Trump has made gains in Minnesota and is now in a dead heat with President Joe Biden, according to a new poll.
The poll, conducted by Emerson College/the Hill, shows Biden and Trump polling evenly, with each getting 45% of the support. However, the results may be within the margin of error and an outlier, as other polls have Biden polling ahead.
“In our first polling in several key swing states since Trump’s conviction last month, there has been little movement, with support for both Trump and Biden staying largely consistent since November,” said Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling.
The news is still likely to be well received by Trump’s campaign, which vowed to put Minnesota and other blue-leaning states such as Virginia on the map. Minnesota has not voted for a Republican presidential nominee since 1972, when it voted for former President Richard Nixon.
Two other polls, however, have Biden with a more substantial lead. A Survey USA/FiveThirtyEight poll puts Biden six points ahead of Trump, with Biden garnering 47% of the support and Trump getting 41% of the support.
A Minnesota Public Radio/Star Tribune/KARE 11 poll recorded similar findings, with Biden getting 45% of the vote and Trump receiving 41%. The poll, however, also considered that finding to be a “dead heat” as those numbers are also within the margin of error.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who is running for reelection, is polling far ahead of her opponent, Royce White, who is not yet the Republican nominee but has the backing of the state’s GOP. A recent KSTP/SurveyUSA poll puts Klobuchar up double digits with a 49% to 35% lead over White.
In 2020, Biden beat Trump in Minnesota by seven percentage points or over 230,000 votes. In 2016, Hillary Clinton received less of a wide margin but still won the state by more than 44,000 votes.
