Just hours after Democrats saw their 2024 election chances dim with President Joe Biden’s poor debate performance on Thursday night, they received more bad news on Friday.
They have lost the edge on their No. 1 issue, abortion.
Despite dedicating millions to advertising against anti-abortion Republicans and attacking former President Donald Trump as the architect of the end of Roe v. Wade, a new survey shared with Secrets on Friday found that just 2 points separate who voters “trust more” on the abortion issue.
By a 45%-43% margin, Rasmussen Reports said that likely voters trust Democrats more. That is within the margin of error.
Democrats have led on the abortion issue for decades and used it to fight off a “red wave” in 2022. But the changing demographics of the country, especially the growth of Hispanic people, have shifted the debate over abortion.
In the poll, 52% of Hispanic people said they trust the GOP more on the issue.
During Thursday night’s presidential debate, Biden fumbled with his answer on the issue, and Trump offered up a politically practical answer, saying his goal was to let states decide abortion rules.
Liberal Washington politicians and pundits have mocked the GOP shift in how it talks about abortion, but Rasmussen’s survey results suggest that the Republicans have cut into the Democratic advantage, leaving them with no dominant issue to campaign on.

Still, the pollster said that abortion-rights voters outnumber anti-abortion voters. Asked their preference, 49% said that they were for abortion rights, and 42% said they were anti-abortion.
The survey of 1,080 likely voters was conducted from June 18 to 20 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. The sample was made up of 35% Democrats, 33% Republicans, and 32% “other.”
