NextImg:Biden administration 'looking at' how to proceed in government shutdown

Biden administration agencies are "looking at" preparing for a government shutdown as both the Senate and House face continued roadblocks toward passing funding legislation before month's end.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre faced a barrage of questions about the looming shutdown during Thursday's press briefing, most of which she used to cast blame on Republicans for not standing by the funding levels brokered by President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) during the debt ceiling showdown over the summer.

While Jean-Pierre did not say if the Office of Management and Budget sent guidance to government agencies on how to prepare for a shutdown, she indicated agencies are already making preparations to operate in a shutdown.

"Certainly, agencies are looking at how to move forward in case there is a shutdown, but I will say this: I mean, very plainly, the best plan is to not have one, is to not have a shutdown," she said in response to a question from the Associated Press. "House Republicans know exactly what they need to do, which is do their jobs."

"Agencies are looking at how to move forward in case there is one," she continued. "This is something that can be avoided here. This is something that House Republicans know very well: that they have to do their jobs. They're the ones to fix this problem."
