Asylum-seekers can now seek shelter at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn after months of negotiations between the White House and New York lawmakers.

Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) announced on Monday that the Biden administration issued a tentative contract to open the site that could house more than 2,000 immigrants as New York City's resources are stretched to account for the influx of asylum-seekers.

“Once the final agreement is signed, we will work with Mayor Adams and his team to set up a Humanitarian Emergency Relief and Response Center at Floyd Bennett Field with the capacity to shelter more than 2,000 asylum seekers,” Hochul said in a statement.

Last week, a lawyer for Hochul denounced New York City Mayor Eric Adams’s response to the immigrant crisis in a legal filing, calling out the city for not accepting a number of state offers for support and site locations. Hochul said she was on the phone with the White House on Wednesday, discussing leasing matters while the federal government debated whether to sign off on using Floyd Bennett Field.

There’s an increasingly high demand for the city’s shelter system to be reevaluated as Hochul has been critical of the federal government's response and said the state has fronted a large amount of resources to help deter the crisis.

Adams estimated New York City will spend $12 billion by the summer of 2025 if the current rate of immigrant arrivals continues. The state already committed $1.5 billion for shelter efforts, and Hochul believes while the federal government signed off on Floyd Bennett Field, New York will likely be funding the site.

Over the weekend, the city opened the largest immigrant shelter for up to 3,000 people. The site on Randall's Island was fully funded by New York state.

"Ultimately the path out of this crisis is granting work authorization immediately, so these individuals can move out of shelter and into independent living arrangements,” Hochul said. “This site will be critical in the interim for the City of New York to provide humanitarian aid, as we work collectively to get people on the path to asylum seeker status and legal work."
