PROVO, UTAH — Recently released biblical film His Only Son has made history again by winning the first-ever Torch Award for Film.

His Only Son, which depicts the biblical account of God asking Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, initially made history as the first-ever crowdfunded film when it hit theaters in March.

Angel Studios, the film’s distributor, recognized the film during its annual Illuminate event, noting its strong support in crowdfunding as well as in theatrical attendance.

His Only Son shocked the box office, opening in the box office’s No. 3 spot as it grossed $5.5 million while showing in less than 2,000 theaters across the country. The film trailed Paramount Pictures’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which grossed $38.5 million in its first weekend, and Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4, which grossed nearly $123 million in two weekends.

“I didn’t expect it,” director David Helling told the Washington Examiner. “We praise the Lord for what he has put together with Angel Studios.”

Due to an impressive showing at the box office, His Only Son raised enough revenue to pay back its 2,024 crowdfunding investors who helped to provide the film’s theatrical marketing budget.

Helling said the film continues to be released in international markets, including South Korea, Brazil, and other locations across Latin America.

“That’s exciting, just to know that this little film that was so humbly made on such a humble budget, that the Lord is just multiplying it out internationally, and that the Gospel impact will continue on for generations,” Helling added.

Sara Seyed, who played the role of Abraham’s wife, Sarah, thanked Helling, saying he “never had any other ambition than shedding light.”
