Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) had very little to say about Rep. Ilhan Omar suggesting some Jewish students at Columbia University “are pro-genocide.”
Sanders appeared on State of the Union on Sunday to rail against the pro-Palestinian protesters across the country who are using rhetoric that is criticized for being antisemitic. While he referred to some comments as “disgusting and stupid,” he tiptoed around the comments Omar made while visiting Columbia University.
“I think it is really unfortunate that people don‘t care about the fact that all Jewish kids should be kept safe and that we should not have to tolerate antisemitism or bigotry for all Jewish students, whether they are pro-genocide or anti-genocide,” Omar said in a clip that host Dana Bash played for the senator. Bash then asked him if he was “comfortable” with that sentiment.
“I don‘t know exactly — Look, what I think the essential point that Ilhan made is that we do not want to see antisemitism in this country,” Sanders said. “And I think the word genocide is something that is being determined by the International Court of Justice but what I will say: I don‘t think there‘s any doubt that what Benjamin Netanyahu is doing now — displacing 80% of the population in Gaza — is ethnic cleansing.”

The Jewish Vermont senator has ancestors who were killed during the Holocaust. During the interview, Sanders condemned antisemitism and islamophobia.
Omar was captured in various photos and videos by students on campus as she walked and shook hands with those in the “anti-war encampment.” Her daughter, Isra Hirsi, was arrested for her part in the protests and subsequently suspended from Barnard College, a women’s liberal arts college offshoot of Columbia University.
