Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) insisted President Joe Biden exercise the 14th Amendment to avoid a disastrous debt default.
Sanders and other liberal Democrats have been pressuring Biden to bypass Congress and act unilaterally to address the impending debt crisis. House Republicans and the White House have been trying to work out a deal to raise the debt limit and cut spending, though the two sides have struggled to agree on which items are off the table.
MAKE OR BREAK: THIS WEEK INTO NEXT IS CRITICAL WINDOW FOR DEBT CEILING NEGOTIATIONS
"In my view, there is only one option," Sanders wrote. "President Joe Biden has the authority and the responsibility under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution to avoid a default."
A plan to use the 14th Amendment to eliminate the debt ceiling is not a "radical" idea, Sanders wrote. However, the country paying its debts "regardless of whether the statutory increase in the debt ceiling is raised or not is an idea that has been supported by Republicans and Democrats."
Biden and the White House have pushed back against the suggestion he try and act without Congress, warning such a move would cause legal troubles.

Last week, Sanders joined 10 Democrats in a letter pushing Biden to invoke the 14th Amendment to address the debt ceiling.
The president and House Republicans resumed talks on Wednesday, with the window to make a deal, draft a bill, and vote on it shrinking every day. To help facilitate the negotiations, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) team met with Biden at the White House after previous talks happened at the Capitol.
